The race to 15.5 has officially begun at the 2022 Presidents’ Cup as a frenetic drive towards the end of Day 3 allowed the international team to turn what was considered a breakthrough into a legitimate ball game. Having cut the US lead from six points overnight to four with an 11-7 aggregate score, the away team will look to build on the momentum in Sunday’s singles and pull off the incredible.
The 20-year-old took Quayle Hollow by storm on Saturday, winning his four-man match against K. H. Lee over world No. 1 Scotty Sheffler and Sam Burns in the morning. Then in the afternoon, he outdid himself along with compatriot Si Wu Kim when the pair took down two-headed monster Patrick Cantley and Xander Schaffele in fourball.
Despite Kim’s heroism, the US lead is still four points thanks to Justin Thomas and Jordan Spit’s 4-0-0 record. The two will play 1-2 in Sunday’s US singles and will try to fend off any smell of frustration. Spit has yet to win the singles match of his career 0-6-1 and will face up-and-coming star Cameron Davis.
The message from the US is clear: don’t give the international team any hope. Let’s hope that with an advanced line-up of Thomas, Spit, Kantley, Scheffler and Burns, any thought of repeating “Miracle in Medina” will be far from sane.
