The transfer portal cycle started early as several players ended their 2022 campaigns prematurely to redshirt and retain their eligibility. While some of these players are immediately eligible to enter the portal as alumni, others will have to wait until the December transfer portal window opens to officially transfer.

This is not a new trend in college football. The players stopped playing in the middle of the season since the debut of the transfer portal in 2018. The most notable early example of this was quarterback Clemson. Kelly Bryant who decided to trade the Clemson Tigers for the Missouri Tigers after Dabo Sweeney swayed him in favor Trevor Lawrence.

Although the institution of transfer windows this year has reduced the number of players who are “quietly moving”, there are still a few notable examples nationally.
