Canadian Adam Hadwin (under 4) holds the lead after one day at The Country Club in Brooklyn, Massachusetts. Hadwin is on the field as a substitute and has a one-shot advantage over Rory McIlroy and four other players. McIlroy, who won the RBC Canadian Open last week, was one of those who threw the stick on Thursday during a motivated first round in which he scored 67 points. McIlroy held the lead for most of Thursday afternoon and is in contention for his fifth major title.

“I’m going to [Friday] with the thought of continuing, not where the cut line is or something like that,” McIlroy said. “If you don’t get off to a good start, these thoughts start creeping in. good start, and yes, I just have to keep going.”

Lefty and the LIV Crew

Playing on his 52nd birthday and with the drama raging around him, Mickelson scored 8 over 78 for 144th out of 154 golfers. Without a low score on Friday, he risks missing out on the cut.

This week, Mickelson is among 15 golfers taking part in the controversial LIV Tour.

LIV Golf players this week, for the most part, struggled through the first round of the US Open. How bad was it? They almost teamed up to shoot their own name.

LIV, in Roman numerals, equals 54.

On Thursday, 15 LIV players scored a total of 53 points. Dustin Johnson (2 under) and James Piot (1 under) were the only ones in the group to break the 70 mark. Jed Morgan had his worst day, scoring 12 over 82. Mickelson wasn’t much better, scoring 78. who played with Mickelson sold out at 77.
