Ward believes Aiyuk has the potential to become No. 1 wide receiver originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
When the 49ers selected Brandon Aiyuk in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, they did so with the vision of an Arizona state product to be the No. 1 receiver.
The 24-year-old is gearing up for his third season in the NFL, and cornerback Charvarious Ward Aiyuk is well on his way to becoming the team’s top target.
“BA has the potential to be one of those great receivers,” Ward told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco in the latest edition of 49ers Talk. “For example, he can be a really wide receiver No. 1 who can run on routes, give balls. He can catch slopes. Short passes, everyone… He has to keep working on his game.”
In the 2021 NFL season, Aiyuk improved his rookie year stats in receiving yards, from 748 in 2020 to 826. In addition, the 49ers wide receiver has had five touchdown campaigns in consecutive seasons.

With Deebo Samuel getting most of the attention from the defense side, it allows Aiyuk to see what he can capitalize on for the upcoming 2022 NFL season.
In addition, it will be interesting to see what effect quarterback Trey Lance can have on Aiyuk when the 23-year-old becomes center, and whether this change will benefit the wide receiver.
