Verrett suffered from injuries throughout his nine-year career. The news comes as he was reported to be in the final stages of rehab for an ACL tear at the end of the 2021 season.

The former first-round pick would have been an effective defensive option for the 49ers this season, as he was an exciting player when he was healthy.

He was put on the list of physically unable to compete at the end of last month and the debut of the season is expected to be announced soon. Since the 2015 All-Pro season, with 12 pass defenses and three interceptions for the San Diego Chargers, he has missed 85 of 105 games. During his career, he played only 40 games, starting 36 of them.

Verrett joined the 49ers in 2019 and played in 13 games in 2020 before injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in his first week last year. In 2019, he was limited to one game due to an ankle injury. He suffered another Achilles tear in 2018 during a training camp physical test with the Chargers and was limited to five games. He tore his cruciate ligament in 2016, his upper lip in 2017, and was only able to play in six games in his 2014 rookie season.

With no prospect of Verrett returning, the 49ers’ predicted starting quarterbacks in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers will be Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir.
