Joel Embiid is now a US citizen.
The Phildelphia 76ers star revealed on Thursday that he was officially sworn in as a US citizen earlier this month.
“I’ve been here a long time,” Embiid said. via The Associated Press. “My son is American. I felt that I live here and being an American is a blessing. So I said, why not?”
Embiid was born and raised in Cameroon. He has been in the United States since playing for Kansas in 2013. Then the 76ers selected him third overall the following summer, and he’s been in Philadelphia ever since.
Embiid and his longtime girlfriend Anna de Paula had a son, Arthur, in 2020.
Since he has French citizenship, either for the 2023 FIBA World Cup or the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, as an American citizen, Embiid can also play for the United States if he decides to start competing internationally.
The 28-year-old Embiid will begin his ninth season in the league this fall. He averaged 30.6 points for his career, which earned him the title of the league’s leading scorer, and 11.7 rebounds last season in Philadelphia.
