It is known as one of the hardest tee shots in professional golf.
So strong, in fact, that Aaron Wise needed to hit four of them from the 18th tee on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass’ Players Stadium. Wise’s three waterballs and subsequent six-time bogey derailed his players’ championship.
Wise went crazy on the intimidating par-3 17th hole, but on the 2nd he was no longer thinking about an early exit. That’s when he hit three almost identical tee-balls, tight shots that started right on the bulkheads and then bounced off the left side of the fairway and fell into the lake.
Since the third time wasn’t glamorous, Wise landed his fourth teeing shot, his seventh tee shot on pine straw.
From there, he shot for 70 yards and managed to get up and down, rolling from 4-foot to “10”.
The number was the second worst finish at 18 in The Players since 1983, tied with Anirban Lahiri in 2017 and only beaten by André Stolz at 11 in 2005.
Wise ended up signing with an 8-for-80 record, his worst 11-round TPC Sawgrass record by five shots.
