Former UFC bi-division champion Daniel Cormier was among the fighters to celebrate Cain Velasquez’s impending release from prison after a judge released him on bail in an attempted murder case.
Cormier, one of Velasquez’s closest teammates at the American Kickboxing Academy, joined other team members and fellow UFC veterans in reacting to the ex-heavyweight champion’s good fortune.
Velasquez, 40, spent eight months in jail after his arrest and was denied bail three times. His high-ranking lawyer Mark Geragos was unable to convince the court that the former UFC champion was not a danger to society, given allegations that he engaged in a high-speed chase through crowded city streets and shot several times at a car with a handgun. A man is accused of molesting his son.
But on Tuesday, after one day of testimony from the officers who took Velasquez into custody and the rejection of a motion to drop Velasquez’s attempted murder charges, Judge Artur Bocanegra granted Velasquez $1 million bail.
Here’s how the fighters reacted to Velasquez’s legal news.
