Adrian Sampson is back with the team cubs after they chose him to contract with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.
Left-handed pitcher Eric Stout was assigned to the task, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster.
Sampson was an effective swingman for the Cubs last summer, finishing with a 2.80 ERA in 10 games/five starts. He’s had an interesting journey this season after returning to the Cubs in March on a minor league contract.
Sampson made one appearance in May before the Cubs declared him a DFA. The Mariners pressed him for waivers, but the DFA fired him soon after, and he signed another minor league contract with the Cubs late last month.
Sampson provides length for the bullpen, which was hit hard and taxed during the Cubs’ nine-game losing streak.
The Cubs called Stout, a native of Glen Ellyn, on Monday. He allowed two runs in two games, hitting six in 3 2/3 innings.
