AFC South news round-up: Lawrence’s signing bonus, Texans still paying (a lot) for Cunningham

It’s that time of the week again when we’re touring the AFC South to check out the divisional rivals Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars.

As with the Titans, we’ve learned the start dates for the Texans, Colts, and Jaguars training camp.

There’s a lot of buzz in Indianapolis around second-year pass rusher Sweetie Pei. Also, one Colts writer thinks Derrick Henry is the best running back the Colts will face in 2022, and he’s right.

In Jacksonville: There was some controversy over a signing bonus for Jaguar quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but it has since been cleared up. Jacksonville is also moving closer to building a new headquarters and training facility.

In Houston: Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton wants more from playing on the run in 2022, and the Texans are still paying a hefty sum for linebacker Zach Cunningham, who is now in Nashville.

The X Factors of the 2022 Season for the Colts

Kevin Hickey of Colts Wire listed the players he believes will be the “X Factors” for Indianapolis in 2022. The list is topped by quarterback Matt Ryan and also includes wide receiver Parris Campbell, who will win the starting left tackle between Matt Pryor and Bernhard Reimann. , defenseman Quiety Pie, defenseman Dayo Odeyingbo, defenseman Nick Cross and cornerback Isaiah Rogers.

Colts training camp start date announced

Like the Titans, the Colts will have veterans heading to training camp on July 26, and rookies three days prior on July 23. Indianapolis will also have joint training sessions with one of its preseason rivals, the Detroit Lions.

Trevor Lawrence denies reports of losing $15M from his cryptocurrency signing bonus

Earlier in the week Bar stool Sport published an article detailing how Lawrence lost $15 million of his $24 million signing bonus because he paid him in crypto, which has mostly been at a peak lately.

However, as it turns out, Lawrence did not receive his NFL signing bonus in crypto, which he pointed out on Twitter. Instead, Lawrence received bonus money for signing a contract with a cryptographic applications company in digital currency. Oops.

Fred Taylor says he wanted to play for Jags’ rival team after he was fired.

Former Jaguars running back Fred Taylor said that after he was knocked out by Jacksonville in 2009, he wanted to play for two teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin joined Taylor. Turn Podcast and said that he had no idea why the team did not pursue the running back.

Jacksonville has approved 2 building permits for the $24.4 million Jags training facility.

The city of Jacksonville has approved a couple of building permits the Jags need to build a new headquarters and training facility. The team is also looking to renovate TIAA Bank Field once the aforementioned construction is completed.

Texans OC team Pep Hamilton wants to step up their running game to create a balanced attack

“If you go and just look at the analytics, look at the data, I think it’s important that you have a balance in attack if you want to be a successful team in this league,” Hamilton said. “Ultimately we are going to do everything in our power to score one point more than the opponent.”

While it’s certainly a logical thought, the Texans may play catch-up more often due to their defense, which could lead to the team abandoning the running game more often. We’ll see.

Texans Training Camp Report Dates Released

New Texans go to training camp July 24, and the veterans will arrive two days later on July 26.

The Texans’ second biggest hit in 2022 is Zach Cunningham.

Texans Wire’s Mark Lane recently named the players who account for the dead cap on Houston’s 2022 payroll, with Titans linebacker Zach Cunningham the second highest with $12.8 million.
