After dazzling at NFL combine, Florida QB Anthony Richardson now among betting favorites to be No. 1 pick

Anthony Richardson is making a comeback in the NFL reunion and the bookies have taken notice.

The Florida quarterback on Saturday posted two position records: a 40.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-9-inch long jump. He also ran a rushing 40-yard run in 4.43 seconds.

At 6’4″ and 244 pounds, Richardson is an elite athlete. Anyone who has seen him play in the SEC knows this. And now there are rumors that he is being considered as the first pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

As of Saturday afternoon, Richardson has moved up significantly on the odds board for the No. 1 pick at BetMGM. Richardson is currently listed at +300second only to Alabama quarterback Bryce Young (-185).

Richardson has shown flashes of genius but has been plagued by inconsistencies in the Gators’ starting lineup in 2022. However, his chances of becoming the first pick have skyrocketed.

Richardson was Florida’s understudy in 2021 as a redshirt freshman but still burst onto the scene in the college football world, making highlights whenever he saw the field. Many of these plays were to his feet, and questions about his ability as a passer persisted.

When he took over the starting role in 2022, Richardson performed brilliantly in Week 1, defeating Utah. A week later, Richardson struggled hard, losing at home to Kentucky. It was a sign of things to come. Richardson had some great moments during the season but often struggled with accuracy and decision making in passing play.

He finished the season with 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, completing just 53.8% of his attempts. He also rushed for 654 yards and scored nine points.

As just a redshirt sophomore, Richardson decided to apply for the NFL Draft even though prospective quarterbacks such as Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, and Kentucky’s Will Lewis also entered the draft.

It’s easy to be enamored with Richardson’s talent. The Chicago Bears currently hold the No. 1 peak but are reportedly willing to trade from that location. The Bears have Justin Fields as quarterback and they have many other needs in their depth chart. They could have received an award from a team in need of quarterbacks.

Can one of these teams eventually decide that Richardson is worth the risk?

Odds for overall pick #1:

  • Alabama QB Bryce Young: -185

  • Florida QB Anthony Richardson: +300

  • Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud: +500

  • Kentucky QB Will Lewis: +900

  • Alabama LB Will Anderson: +1400

  • Texas Tech EDGE Tyree Wilson: +2000

  • Georgia DL Jalen Carter: +3500

  • Clemson D.E. Miles Murphy: +10000
