CHARLOT, North Carolina. For Max Homa and teammate Tony Finau, the 15th hole was a bit of everything – disappointment, luck, skill and, in the end, relief.

The American duo tied with Taylor Pendrith and Mito Pereira on the first day of the Presidents’ Cup when Finau hit a bunker to the right of the 15th fairway and Homa’s approach swept left and into the creek that surrounds the green.

“I tried to hit the bottom and it came out straight,” Khoma said. “I don’t know what that beat is, but I appreciate it.”

Homa’s shot bounced off a rock in the penalty area and hit a bump about 40 yards from the green, giving Finau an incredibly difficult chip.

“I can’t explain how strong Tony’s punch was. He had a bad lie and he had very little land to land where it would remain even on the lawn,” Homa said. “I was ready for the chip or maybe the next hit from the bunker. Somehow he gave me 10 feet and I luckily made it.”

The parity save kept the Americans tied with the international team and secured a one-lead triumph to end a dominant day for Team USA with wins in four of the day’s five matches.

“It was a huge turnaround,” Khoma said. It was a huge boost for us at the time.”
