Ehe president of the Spanish Rugby Federation is as much in the eye of the hurricane as our entire oval sport. For him, the problem of the ‘World case’ has deeper roots and has two feelings: misunderstanding and disappointment. On July 2, at the convened Assembly, he will make his resignation effective and from Monday 4 elections can be called. The process has been carried out within the minimum period required by the federal statutes.

Q: -What is the current state of our rugby, what has the federation tried and what has it achieved?

R.- The first thing we tried and achieved was rescue to the Federation of the complicated economic situation in which it found itself and, by extension, refloat Spanish rugby. Despite having to be very austere to clean up the accounts, at a sporting level we managed to get all our teams will improve their level and that the national competitions continued to grow. Although it seems that some forget it, just when we had already managed to plug holes and start investing, the pandemic arrived and what it meant. Despite this, we continue to grow sportingly and the evolution was clearly upward. Until the unfortunate ‘Alcobendas case’ has caused what it has caused.

P:- You have called for unity in Spanish rugby in the ‘World event’ so to speak, but do you think that the concept of unity exists in Spanish rugby?

R:- It pains me to say it, but I think It has been more than proven that. Practically, since my arrival at the presidency of the FER, I have missed that unity to be able to push everyone together in the same direction. It is enough to remember the statements of our national coach, Santi Santos, after the victory against Romania, when he said that he had the feeling that there are people who did not want us to go to the World Cup. I have the same feeling now, especially seeing what is happening in the process of appealing to World Rugby.

If the copy of a document is falsified and a player lies to us, we are defenseless and we are all deceived”

Alfonso Feijoo, president of the Spanish Rugby Federation

Q:- What steps did the Spanish Federation follow in the process of calling Gavin van der Berg?

R:- Well, those marked by World Rugby, which even congratulated us for the rigor with which an issue as complex as eligibility was controlled, and complying with what was agreed by the Delegate Commission of the FER Assembly in the dispatch circular of licenses. That is to say, and I quote verbatim, that “applications for accreditation of the status of ‘F’ formation player of those who wish to appear as such in the competitions organized by the FER must be sent, together with all the relevant documentation , by mail to the Eligibility Commission”. From there, if from a club a copy of a document is falsified and a player lies to uswe are defenseless and, from then on, we are all deceived.

Q: – Do you think that the Federation is trying to take on the blame of others?

R:- It has been like this since the moment the sanction was known. As I am tired of repeating myself, I have no choice but to take responsibility, but not blame. At the FER, despite having all the information and even the guilty confession, we had no choice but to keep silence during the process. Which, as the players’ reaction especially reflected, backfired on us. I not only understand, but also share, the anger of the players and fans.

I’d be lying if I said I haven’t had many disappointments. The values of rugby are not preached, they are demonstrated with facts”

Alfonso Feijoo, president of the Spanish Rugby Federation

P: –To what extent is your disappointment with everything that has happened?

R: – Well, imagine… I put myself at the head of the FER for the love of rugby. After having been a player and a coach, I did it in a disinterested, without charging a euro. And I did it at a critical moment from an economic and social point of view, which did not prevent us from growing sportingly, both in XV and in Seven. In fact, in XV we are in 15th place in the men’s ranking and in 10th place in the women’s ranking. Our two teams seven, the men’s and women’s, will continue one more season in the World Rugby Sevens Series and can go to the World Cup in South Africa this year. Although I know that there are many people who value it, I would be lying if I said that I have not taken many disappointments. Honestly, she thought in rugby we were a little better, but it’s not like that. Values are not preached, they are demonstrated with facts.

P: –What would you answer to all those who ask for your immediate resignation and not at the end of the process as you have promised?

R: –First, I would remind you that I was the one who communicated to the Higher Sports Council, and more specifically to its general director, my resignation when this process is finished, hopefully with Spain in the World Cup. Yes, contrary to what the Secretary of State for Sports said, with whom, by the way, he has not called me and I have not seen him since the game against Portugal, who came to the Central. And, second, that those who want to enter the FER should not be in such a hurry or at least hide it. Raising a motion of censure against me when I have said that I will leave and, above all, doing it in the middle of the appeal process to World Rugby, I think it has portrayed them before Spanish rugby. It’s hard to say, but it seems that, As long as they are there, they don’t want Spain to go to the World Cupsomething in which we have to continue trusting.

It’s hard to say it, but it seems that, as long as ‘them’ are there, they don’t want Spain to go to the World Cup.”

Alfonso Feijoo, president of the Federación Española de rugby

P –Why in Spanish rugby is it conceivable that, before an official request, it is answered with a forgery?

R:- I wonder the same thing. I never thought that in our rugby someone could falsify a document in order to obtain a competitive advantage. With the aggravating circumstance that, in this specific case, it can affect nothing less than Spain’s qualification for a World Cup. Although I know that there are those who think that the FER has been negligent, the reality is that We have been victims of a deception that has left the credibility of our rugby very affected, and this is serious. As I have said before, the Eligibility Commission has acted in strict compliance with what is established by the applicable regulations, issued by the Delegate Commission of the FER.

I understand and share the anger of players and fans but the criticism and blame must be assumed by those who have manipulated

Alfonso Feijoo, president of the Federación Española de rugby

P:- What message would you send to whoever has been in charge of the direction of Spanish rugby in the future?

R:- I wish that, for the good of Spanish rugby, have all the external support that I have lacked, especially by clubs Honor Division, who came together in an association that unfortunately has not served to carry out what was initially its purpose, to promote competition by making it more professional, and from which there are now people who apply to enter the FER. That was the fear that moved me to stand for re-election and the fear with which I will leave. To manage Spanish rugby, you have to think about all of Spanish rugby, and not just a part of it.
