Amateur star Gordon Sargent signs with same agency that reps Tiger Woods

Gordon Sargent, Vanderbilt’s standout sophomore and reigning NCAA individual champion, had several meetings with potential agencies about name representation, image, and likeness.

The latest was with Excel Sports, who Sargent signed with last month.

“After being with them, I kind of realized that they are the right fit for me and they seem to have the best guys,” Sargent said on Tuesday, returning from the tournament in Cabo. “… It came down to their reputation and the guys in the group.”

For now, Sargent’s only deal is with Titleist/FootJoy, but he’s excited to start building his own brand and expects to “hopefully have a few things ready this summer.”

Excel also represents professionals such as Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas and Colleen Morikawa. Lance Young will be Sargent’s top agent.

Sargent, who is currently the top college golfer and the world’s No. 2 amateur, after an NCAA title-winning freshman season, had a sophomore season that included two wins and a no worse T-7 in seven starts for the top commodores.

And he did all this under a giant microscope, as he was declared the best college applicant since John Ram.

“It shows that people trust you and see potential in you, which then gives you confidence back,” Sargent said. “The agent process was a little overwhelming just because I’m 19, I’m kind of the decision maker for the rest of my life, and I was hoping one group would stand out and that was Excel, so I was grateful for that.

“The whole process, once it started, it was great to be with all the guys and get to know them and see how they see you and the future, but I was also kind of ready to get it over with. I’ve been with Excel for over a month now and the amount of work they’ve done for me has been tremendous, just lifted a huge burden off my chest.”
