Kelly’s buyout requires him to receive $8.5 million if he is fired before December 2023 and $4.27 million if he is fired before December 2024. This amount will drop to zero in December 2025.
Kelly, who turns 60 in November, will owe the school $3 million if he leaves before the end of this season and $1.5 million if he leaves before the end of the 2025 season.
Athletic director Martin Jarmond cited the team’s improvement in each of Kelly’s five seasons as a long-term commitment. The Bruins went 9-4 last season, finishing fifth in the Pac-12 Conference before losing to Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl. They were ranked 21st in the latest Associated Press poll.
