Beijing Olympics 2022: Five women disqualified from mixed team ski jumping event over baggy outfits

Athletes work their whole lives to get to the Olympics, but wearing the wrong clothes, for example, can lead to their disqualification. That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday when five skiers were disqualified from the mixed team ski jumping event for wearing too baggy clothing.

According to Yahoo Sports, the women who competed together for Austria, Japan, Norway and Germany were disqualified because the judges ruled that their clothing was too loose and could give them an advantage in the air. However, the women had already had their clothes cleaned in earlier jumps, so being disqualified later in the event was somewhat shocking.

” [International Ski Federation] ruined everything with this operation,” Katharina Althaus, one of the disqualified athletes, reportedly said. “I think they destroyed women’s ski jumping. I’ve been tested so many times in 11 years of ski jumping and I’ve never been disqualified.

“I know my costume is up to the mark… 160 World Cup starts, 5 World Championships, 3 Olympics and I got my first disqualification. My heart is broken”.

Karl Geiger, who competes for the German men’s ski jumping team, also spoke out against the ruling and asked if the rules for women were “changed overnight”.

“We stick together no matter what. However, I have to ask myself if the rules for women have changed overnight with so many disqualifications?!? It was not the right time or place to disqualify so many athletes from different countries. Geiger said, according to Yahoo Sports.

Women’s ski jumping is a relatively new feature of the Winter Games. It was only added to the Olympic Games in 2014, and mixed team ski jumping became part of the Games for the first time this year.

Slovenia won the mixed classification with 1001.5 points, Russia came in second with 890.3 points and Canada came in third with 844.6 points.
