HA couple of months ago, the vice president of the Betis, Jose Miguel Lopez Catalan, revealed in a radio interview the need for the Verdiblanco club to sell soccer players for some 25 million euros before June 30 to balance the accounts. But just over a week before the deadline with the end of the year, the Heliopolitan entity has not completed any exit operation with a transfer in between, something that is explained in a change of internal scenario.

After a profound debate, the heads of the Betis have come to the conclusion that it is more convenient to assume a second consecutive season of losses (last year the red numbers exceeded 36 million euros due to covid) than to be forced to sell players urgently for prices that, in view of the calls and scores received in recent weeks, do not come close to what they consider their market price to be.

Change of strategy with a new economic plan

To do this, the club has changed its strategy. On the main floor of the Benito Villamarin These days, a strategic plan is being finalized that inescapably involves returning to a positive balance from next season, leaving behind the red numbers, and trying to recover the losses accumulated in these last two years through strict control of income and expenses in the next four years, taking advantage of both aspects enabled by LaLiga as a forecast of increased income in other concepts.

The employers’ association has authorized the clubs to calculate the losses attributable to covid in five years (15% in 2022-2023, 20% in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, respectively, and 22.5% in 2025-2026) , with which despite losing money again, there will not be an excessively relevant penalty in terms of the spending limit on the registrable template. And from there, the club’s forecast is to grow economically in practically all areas, starting with the well-known membership campaign.

With an average increase of 15% in the price of cards, the Betis hopes to refill the quota of seats available for subscribers, thus increasing the collection. This would be one of the most relevant ordinary revenues of the budget together with the sale of seats, which they hope will be the same or better than last year with 22 official matches guaranteed at their stadium (19 in the League and three in Europa League), to which is added the different resources generated on match days in the Villamarin.

More money for TV rights and merchandising

An increase in the income that the Verdiblancos will receive for television rights is also expected, by improving their sports performance (fifth classified this past year, sixth the previous one…). The money that the Betis will receive for playing one more competition, the Spain Supercupand more economic resources are expected in advertising, increasing the number of sponsors, and in merchandising sales, with the change of brand to Hummel and a different management of official stores increasing control and margins.

To all these concepts Betis You must add, when you receive an interesting proposal, the extraordinary income generated by the sale of soccer players, which range from the amounts received for transfers to the savings in salaries that these sales entail. Some movements that the Verdiblanco club trust will be sufficient, together with their different spending adjustments, to avoid a third year of losses and return to the path of economic growth that was stopped in its tracks by the covid.
