Wales captain and midfielder Dan Biggar joined Toulon from Northampton Saints midway through the season, both clubs announced on Friday.
Biggar has already made clear his intention to leave Northampton at the end of the season as his contract has expired, but he now join Toulon with immediate effect.
“I never thought I’d be leaving the Saints midway through the season, but the opportunity presented itself very quickly,” Biggar said. “I made the decision with the long term in mind for my family.”
Biggar began his career at the Ospreys where he made 221 appearances before joining Northampton in 2018, helping the club win the Rugby Premier League Cup in his debut season. The midfielder’s last game for Northampton was in October.
Northampton chief executive Mark Darbon said: “Given the circumstances – Dan’s contract ends at the end of the season, his availability until the end of the current campaign, a multi-year offer to Dan from Toulon that was contingent on his immediate move. and the quality of promising midfielders is already at the club – we wanted to be pragmatic when Dan approached us.
“Dan is not just a world class player, he is also one of the nicest guys you can meet. He is someone who has always gone above and beyond to help the club on and off the pitch. So we will miss him, but he leaves with our best wishes.”
