Boise State QB Hank Bachmeier to transfer in wake of Broncos firing offensive coordinator, per reports

Two days after the Broncos fired offensive coordinator Tim Ploaf, veteran Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier will enter the transfer portal, multiple reports say. Turnover followed a 27-10 loss to UTEP in Week 4, one of the worst results for the program since it moved to the Football Bowl division in 1996.

Bachmeier started 29 games in his four-year career, throwing for over 6,600 yards and 41 touchdowns. As a junior, he overcame a 3,000 passing yard pass by completing 63% of his passes. However, things went downhill in the first four games of the 2022 season, with Bachmeier completing a career-high 54% of passes under 500 yards.

By moving now, Bachmeier is eligible to consider the 2022 season as a redshirt year and will have two full years of eligibility remaining at the next stop; Bachmeier did not use his redshirt season and the Covid exemption granted by the NCAA. Redshirted freshman quarterback Tylen Green is the next player on the depth chart. The Lewisville, Texas native completed 19 of 28 passes for 155 yards in a week one loss to Oregon State.

With Plow out, Boise State will bring in former NFL and Boise State coach Dirk Ketter to run the offense. Ketter, an Idaho native, worked as an offensive analyst for the Broncos. His son, Davis Ketter, is a wide receiver on the team.

Lost Potential

Bachmeier changed the game when he joined the Brian Harsin program in 2019. The Murrieta, California native finished 6th as a professional quarterback and 235th overall in his class, making him the top quarterback and second. – the best recruit in the history of the state of Boise.

He showed great ability in his first season, throwing for 407 yards in a win over Florida State and starting eight games before his season was cut short by injury. Bachmeier and 1,000-yard runner George Holani looked like the next great duo in Boise State after leading the Broncos to a 12-2 season.

However, things went downhill in Boise, even though Bachmeier’s play remained stable. The Broncos have allowed more than two sacks per game in each of their last two seasons, and this has caused Bachmeier to get injured frequently. A 7-5 campaign last season was the program’s worst winning percentage since 1998.

Bachmeier will have another chance to rewrite his student legacy elsewhere, as this is unlikely to be resolved in Boise.

Disappointing tenure

Pluff, 37, was hired to recreate the Boise State offense after an impressive run under Dan Hawkins at UC Davis. In 2019, the American Football Coaches Association named him to the 35 under 35s after leading Aggie to three consecutive top 10 passing fouls. However, within two years in Boise, his crimes stopped.

The loss to UTEP dropped Boise State to 121st nationally in total offense with only 283.2 yards per game and 4.4 yards per game. Passing offense averages only 15 more yards per game than the Army, which uses a triple option.

The crimes of Boise state began to develop in the wrong direction in the second half of the Harsin era, but Plaf’s fight stood apart. He will almost certainly still be a sought-after offensive coordinator within the FCS, but he may have to return to the FBS.

Critical moment for Avalos

The change marks a critical moment for second-year manager Andy Avalos, who has gone 9-7 for two seasons. The former Boise State linebacker was hired after an extended stint with the Broncos under Chris Petersen and Brian Harsin with a two-year hiatus as defensive coordinator for Mario Cristobal in Oregon.

Avalos is only in his second year but has almost as many losses in 16 games (7) as Petersen has in eight seasons (12). Boise State Athletic Director Jeremy Dickey is highly regarded in the industry. However, he may have to make a difficult decision if things don’t get better – for the sake of the program.

The Broncos are 2-2 for the second season in a row. Before Avalos took over, Boise State had not started a 2–2 season since 2017. Boise State plays San Diego State at 8:00 pm Friday night in the first post-Bachmeier era game.
