‘Can’t play games in there’: Pros react to confusion over Davey Grant’s win, Raphael Assunção retirement

There was no way Rafael Assuncao and Davey Grant could leave the octagon without causing some chaos.

With Assuncao having one of the most decorated bantamweight resumes and Grant refusing to ever get into boring fights, it was inevitable that fans would witness something crazy at the UFC in Las Vegas.

After two rounds back and forth, the bantamweights clashed horns for the final frame. When both men became entangled in the fence, Judge Keith Peterson intervened, separated them, and stated that Grant grabbed the fence after repeated warnings to stop.

With the points deducted, Assunção and his head coach, Erik Niksik, appeared to be confused as to why Peterson resumed action rather than put him back in position. Bt Grant refused to let him plead his case as he beat Assunção with punches before fixing a reverse triangle against the fence.

As Assuncao’s oxygen supply was rapidly running low, Grant shrunk until the judge tore him away from the unconscious body below him.

Almost immediately after the loss, the Brazilian took off his gloves and announced the end of his 19-year career.
