The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to place resilient catcher Yadier Molina on the 10-day injured list due to knee pain. reports The Athletic. The team has not yet announced a roster change. Molina, who turns 40 next month, has been one of the top workhorse catchers throughout his career. He is one of only six players ever to have played 2,000 career games and is fourth in innings caught. Here is the list:

  1. Ivan Rodriguez: 20 348
  2. Carlton Fisk: 18 511 2/3
  3. Bob Boon: 18 459
  4. Yadier Molina: 17 980
  5. Gary Carter: 17 368 2/3

It goes without saying that the knee problems have to do with Molina’s age-age catcher territory and such a busy career. This is a responsible position, and Molina’s longevity is one of the reasons he will one day join Rodriguez, Fisk and Carter in the Hall of Fame.

There is no timeline for Molina’s comeback and it’s worth noting that he’s approaching several major milestones in his career. He and Adam Wainwright have 315 career games, second most in history behind Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan (324). In addition, Molina has played 2,145 career games as a catcher, placing him within striking distance of Fisk (2,226) all-time. Rodriguez leads with 2427 points.

The Cardinals have won five of their last seven games and are number one in the NL Central. With Molina suspended, the club will rely on Andrew Knizner and prospect Ivan Herrera at the plate. Knizner is a major league hitter at .193/.282/.269 and Herrera owns a .291/.388/.436 batting line in Triple-A.

Molina is hitting .213/.225/.294 with two home runs this season, though most of his value comes from his defense and his work with the pitching staff. Molina said last year that he intends to retire this season..

St. Louis opens a three-game weekend streak with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday night.
