Carson Wentz: I’m going to do what I can to help and support Taylor Heinicke

FROM Taylor Heinicke after leading the team to a 4-1 record in their last five games, head coach Ron Rivera decided to keep him in the starting lineup. Carson Wentzwhich comes back after a finger injury.

Wentz was scheduled to return from injured reserve on Wednesday and took part in his first practice since injury in week six. He also addressed the media after training and noted that he understands Rivera’s decision.

“I understand. It’s part of the business and I fully understand where we are on the team,” Wentz said via Niki Jabwala of Washington Post. “As a competitor, you want to be there. … But at the same time, I have a great relationship with Taylor and all the guys … and I will do everything in my power to help and support him.”

The Commanders were 2-4 in the first six games that Wentz started, with the quarterback completing 62.1 percent of his passes for 1,489 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Although Wentz returned to training, Rivera said in his press conference that Sam Howell this week will still be a backup quarterback against the Falcons.
