The coaching carousel started at the start of this season and added a new opening on Sunday, but there weren’t many real surprises.

In early fall, four Power 5 jobs were highlighted, circled, and underlined as the most likely to open: Arizona State, Auburn, Georgia Tech, and Nebraska. Now all four are free. The Group 5 also had some tough coaching situations, including South Florida’s Jeff Scott, who received a small contract extension in January despite a school record of 3-18.

The USF definitely wanted Scott to make a difference. He still had many supporters, including athletic director Michael Kelly. But the winnings just never came. After Saturday’s 54-28 away loss to Temple, who lost four straight and did not score more than 20 points in league play, the USF fired Scott. He went 1-8 this season and finished 4-26 at school (1-18 in AAC games).
