Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku will return to Inter Milan on a one-year loan deal after a disappointing spell at the Premier League club, according to reports on Tuesday.

Inter have reportedly agreed an eight million euros ($8.4 million) loan fee to sign Lukaku, who has reportedly agreed to a pay cut to leave Stamford Bridge.

Before the start of last season, the Belgian joined Chelsea for a club-record fee of £97.5m, saying the move was an emotional homecoming after playing for the club from 2011 to 2014.

But after the 29-year-old scored four goals in his first four matches, a second stint at Chelsea quickly turned sour.

Lukaku finished this season as Chelsea’s top scorer with 15 goals, but the former Manchester United and Everton player has only scored eight times in the league.

He only scored three goals in his last 15 top flight appearances as he failed to pay his massive transfer fee.

In a controversial interview on Italian television in December, Lukaku admitted he was unhappy with the way he was being used by Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and hinted that he was already considering leaving.

Lukaku, who won the Serie A title with Inter in 2021, was briefly sacked by Tuchel after his outburst and was forced to apologize to Chelsea and the club’s fans in January.

Tuchel’s team finished third in the Premier League and won the Club World Cup but lost to Liverpool in both the FA Cup and League Cup finals.

Lukaku is credited with pushing for a return to Inter, with new Chelsea co-owner Todd Boeli immediately sealing his post, giving the green light for the star’s departure.

Once Lukaku’s move is officially complete, the Blues will be able to turn their attention to finding a replacement, as well as strengthening in other areas of the squad.

Chelsea are showing interest in Robert Lewandowski despite the Polish striker’s desire to leave Bayern Munich for Barcelona.

Barcelona’s financial troubles could open doors for Chelsea to lash out at Lewandowski’s unsettled situation.

But Lukaku’s impending departure could lead Tuchel to a more flexible approach without a clear focus striker.

Chelsea are showing strong interest in Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling as the England striker is ready to leave the Premier League champions with just one year left on his contract.

Tuchel is also looking to complete the signing of Sevilla’s French defender Jules Kunde.
