Clemson gives raises, contract extensions to staff Mike Bobo returns to run Georgia offense Report: Shannon Dawson to Miami as offensive coordinator

CLEMSON, SC — Clemson Board of Trustees approves promotion for special teams coordinator and cornerback coach Mike Reid and defensive back coach Nick Eason.

Reed and Eason also received a one-year extension, allowing them to remain tied to the Tigers until January 31, 2026.

Reed’s annual salary, who has been with the Tigers since 2013, has increased from $50,000 to $800,000. Eason, a former standout for Clemson, joined the team last season. His compensation was also increased from $50,000 to $800,000.

Seven other assistants were given one-year extensions by the Trustees’ Compensation Committee, but without a pay increase.

Joint Defense Coordinators Wes Goodwin and Mickey Conn have extended their contracts until January 31, 2026.

Defensive coach Lemansky Halltight end coach Kyle Richardson, offensive line coach Thomas Austin, running back coach cj plays and wide receivers trainer Tyler Grisham all received a one-year extension through January 31, 2025.

New offensive coordinator Garret Riley Last month, he received a three-year contract for $1.75 million per season.

Clemson will pay his 10 field assistants $7.475 million this season, up $925,000 from 2022.

The Tigers went 11-3 last season, winning the Atlantic Coast Conference title for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Mike Bobo regained his position as offensive coordinator in Georgia, with Todd Monken leaving the two-time reigning national champions in the NFL.

Bobo, a former Bulldogs quarterback and longtime assistant coach at his alma mater, also served as an offensive coordinator under the former coach. Mark Richt.

Bobo, 48, has plenty to do. Monken accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Baltimore Ravens after working on the team that led Georgia to consecutive national titles.

The Bulldogs averaged 38.6 points per game in 2021 and 41.1 points per game last season, finishing 15-0, capped by TCU’s record breaking 65-7 in the national championship game.

Monken’s three-season stint with the Bulldogs will be remembered for the quarterback’s stunning rise. Stetson Bennett from passerby to Heisman Trophy finalist.

“We are very grateful and grateful for the three years that Todd and his wife Terri have spent with our UGA family,” coach Georgia. Kirby Smart says in the statement. “We wish them all the best when he moves to the Ravens organization.”

Bobo, who served as head coach at Colorado State and South Carolina after leaving Georgia after the 2014 season, returned to his alma mater a year ago as an offensive quality control analyst.

“Mike was a great addition to our staff last year as an analyst and we look forward to his extended lead on the offensive side of the ball,” Smart said.

Bobo takes over the offense with some serious holes to fill, especially at quarterback with Bennett gone. Carson Beck, who has received limited playing time as an understudy for the past two years, is expected to take over the job. But he’ll have to knock out Brock Wandagriffone of the best QBs in the recruiting class of 2021, and Shooter Stocktonanother touted prospect yet to play at the college level.

Whoever wins this job will focus on Bobo, who will produce the same development that Monken got from Bennett.

Smart said he was confident that Bobo could handle the role. The two were teammates in Georgia during the 1990s and coached together in 2005 when Smart was an assistant on Richt’s staff.

Bobo served 14 seasons under Richt, starting as quarterback coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator, earning him two SEC titles.

At Colorado State, Bobo’s team went 7-6 and bowled each of his first three seasons, but he was fired in 2019 after the Rams had fallen to 7-17 over the past two years. He then returned to the Southeast Conference, joining the Will Mushampheadquarters as offensive coordinator for the 2020 season. When Musham was sacked with three games left in the campaign, Bobo took over as interim manager. The Gamecocks lost all three events to finish 2–8.

Bobo moved to Auburn in 2021 to work as the new coach’s offensive coordinator. Brian Harsonly to be fired after four losses to Alabama in overtime in the regular season finale; Harsin lasted less than two seasons.

Smart pointed out that Bobo has “a decade of experience as a successful SEC player and over 20 years in the UGA as a player and coach.”

Georgia averaged 458.6 yards and 41.3 points per game in the final year of Bobo’s previous tenure as offensive coordinator. The Bulldogs will aim for the same result in 2023 when they claim a third straight national title.

Miami hires assistant from Houston Shannon Dawson to be the offensive coordinator, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.

This person spoke on condition of anonymity as the deal was still in the process of being finalized and required approval from the university.

Dawson has spent the last four years with Houston, the last three years as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. In those three years, Houston threw 87 touchdown passes, the 13th most of any FBS program.

The Cougars also completed 65.2% of their passes in that stretch and threw for 10,010 yards – both stats ranked 21st nationally in the last three years.

Dawson was previously offensive coordinator for Southern Miss, Kentucky, West Virginia, Stephen F. Austin, and Millsaps. Dawson has coached eight bowl games, including the Orange Bowl with West Virginia, and the FCS playoffs and Division III playoffs.

Dawson will replace in Miami Josh Gattiswho was fired last month after the Hurricanes lost 5-7 in his only season at school.

Miami’s offense fell short of expectations in 2022. Part of it was due to injuries: starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke suffered a shoulder injury, and the Hurricanes turned to Jake Garcia – who have since transferred – and Jacurri Brown most of the season.

Last fall, Miami scored 100 points in their first two games, beating Bethune-Cookman and Southern Miss. The Hurricanes averaged just 18.3 points the rest of the way and ended the year 5-0 in games where the defense allowed them to score no more than 14 points. – but 0-7 when the opponents scored more than 14.

Last season, Miami was 86th nationally in total offense, averaging 367.1 yards per game, and 97th in offensive scoring.

Dawson is Miami’s second coordinating coach. Mario Cristobal hired this month. He also hired Lance Guidry, who last season was Marshall’s defensive coordinator and took over the same position at Tulane. Guidry comes off the bench Kevin Steelwho left the Hurricanes for Alabama.
