Newcastle United won their fourth match in a row and extended their Premier League unbeaten streak to nine with a 4-1 thrashing of Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The Magpies finished skilfully, but the match was in the balance when Che Adams missed a golden chance to tie at 1 early in the second half.

Romain Perrault continues to be a bright spot for the Saints, with the left-back scoring his second goal of the season and scoring a couple of assists earlier this year.

Newcastle United are third with 27 points and Saints are 18th with 12 points. The goal difference of Magpie +17 is second only to Arsenal and Manchester City.

What we learned from the match “Southampton” – “Newcastle”

Newcastle is light as air: It hardly mattered that Southampton were at the forefront, even when Newcastle were 1-0 up and couldn’t find chances for a second, as the atmosphere around Miguel Almiron and his teammates is one of “We’ll have it all.” Good”. The Magpies are creating quality chances, defending quite well and are still waiting for the full return of Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak. As we said earlier in this section, Eddie Howe’s work to get the most out of players who were in town before the big takeover is almost as important as the new additions. The vibes are nearly flawless, and a team that would go berserk for missing a key element like Joelinton just brushes it off this time.

Saints need a finisher, JWP is back in shape: Southampton’s scouting department has done an excellent job of identifying young talent and the Saints are good on both sides, as is Perrault. Che Adams is fit and Adam Armstrong was smart when he joined his childhood club but Southampton don’t get stellar centre-forward play and you have to think Armando Broch’s second year would be perfect if Chelsea sanctioned a loan deal or sale. And while the JPW on this website is always up to date, the Saints’ JWP doesn’t work: James Ward-Prowse has to find his 2021-22 form if he wants to be an important factor for Southampton, let alone England. Could Ralph Hasenhutl be in serious trouble without a mid-week cup success, especially with the old ghosts of Liverpool looming next weekend?

tactical focus

Bruno Guimares and Joe Willock are active in midfield and Eddie Howe’s men are having fun there, but it really came down to Southampton refusing to score when the game was still hanging in the balance. Adams attempted a shot over the back post on goal when a side kick could have worked just fine and what could have been 1-1 became 2-0 within 2-3 minutes. James Ward-Prowse also shot a free-kick right at Nick Pope, and the Saints had more than enough attempts to get something out of it.
