We sit and analyze just about everything about Notre Dame football and with just a month before the season actually kicks off, you can bet it will continue.
What, however, do those who really know think of Notre Dame in their first year, with Marcus Freeman taking over the team as head coach?
Athlon Sports magazine previews can now be found on newsstands across the country, and one of the highlights of the annual edition is when opposing or other college football coaches evaluate teams ahead of the season. Here’s what various coaches who were asked about Notre Dame answered in Athlon Sports’ 2022 American Football Preview Magazine.

“Let’s say there is no recession, and everything is about the same in terms of the execution of the game day. If so, then the difference between Brian Kelly and Marcus Freeman will be hiring and development. Many of us really think that under Marcus they will be better recruiters. If Marcus can better recruit and maintain development to standards, then he is a better coach. It’s the best national development program by definition, because they can get elite players, they can get tough, big guys, or they can get smart guys that are rougher, and put them all together.”

“They are very good offensively. Tommy Rhys is smart; now he could become a head coach if he wanted to. QB is more than they want in this system. They are better when they can run in this position. OL is just consistently good. Always a problem to create pressure. hard end [Michael Mayer] honestly, the best striker on the team. [Lorenzo] The Stiles guy started showing up at the end too.”
Security scheme changes?

“Last year, Marcus managed some of Clark Lee’s stuff and some of his. Now it’s all his guys, so I think you’re going to see more hybrid 3-4s and less of a 3-3 stack.”
Will Freeman be able to secure a contract with the best recruits?

“There’s a huge pressure to win immediately and continue, but I think the real measurement is whether Marcus can get those two or three difference makers that Brian’s guys never could.”
