USC secured the right to boast a thrilling 48-45 victory over rival UCLA on Saturday, but the Trojans also earned much more in the process. They took a place in the Pac-12 championship game and moved up to 5th in a new coaches poll released Sunday.

A stunning loss for Tennessee in South Carolina opened the doors for USC to climb into the top five of the new rankings as the Trojans brace for a showdown with Notre Dame to close out the regular season. The Volunteers dropped from 5th to 11th due to a 63–38 loss to the Gamecocks.

While USC still has a lot of work to do to reach the college football playoffs, the rise of the Trojans in the polls is a good sign of their viability on the national stage. With quarterback Caleb Williams looking like a Heisman Trophy contender, the Trojans will grab national attention as they take on the 15th fighting Irish this week and then play another quality opponent in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Dec. 2.

Oregon was among the big poll winners this week as the Ducks moved up four spots to No. 9 after beating Utah. If Oregon beats No. 22 Oregon State in this week’s rivalry, it would result in a top 10 clash in the Pac-12 title game between the Ducks and USC.

Georgia remained in first place in this week’s poll after a 16-6 win in Kentucky, with Ohio State’s No. 2, Michigan’s No. 3, and TCU’s No. 4 also holding their own after small wins in Week 12.
