Cole no-hit bid into 8th, Yanks beat Rays 4-2 for 50th win

ST. SAINT PETERSBURG, Florida — Gerrit Cole made a no-hit bet in the eighth inning, Aaron Hicks hit the top three of the tiebreaker in the ninth like Manuel Margo hit the wall in right field, and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Monday night for their 50th win.

New York has won 17 of its last 19 games, and its 50-17 start is the best in the major leagues since the 2001 Seattle Mariners. The Yankees opened up a 14-game lead over third-seeded Tampa Bay in East Alabama.

Cole struck out 12 and walked three, allowing one run and one hit in 7 1/3 innings. Cole scored six in a row to take a 2-0 lead when Isaac Walls landed a slider on his 105th innings off the mound to center field. On June 3, Cole hit 6 2/3 perfect innings in Detroit.
