College football predictions, picks, odds: Michigan, Ole Miss, Utah on upset alert in Week 5

Upsets and close challenges quickly became the history of the college football season. In Week 4, No. 18 Oklahoma became the fifth top 10 preseason team to lose to a lower-ranked opponent. There were also many almost disappointments. #4 Michigan struggled to get rid of Maryland; No. 5 Clemson needed double overtime to beat No. 22 Wake Forest; No. 13 Oregon could have lost to Washington State; and No. 8 Kentucky may have anticipated No. 14 Ole Miss in their victory over Northern Illinois.

As we get deeper into the conference, it’s time to take advantage of smart betting where there’s extra money. Many highly ranked teams are in a vulnerable position, including some of those that were on high alert a week ago, and the conditions could be right for some splashes on the moneyline.

Of course, the challenge will be to see if these matches end up being speed bumps or harbingers of things to come. With a month of football under our belt, we’re diving in to pick five potential disappointments to have on your radar as we head into week five.

Say what you want about the Iowa offense, but the Hawkeyes are wreaking havoc defensively. Iowa held their three opponents to 23 points combined! Perhaps more importantly, Iowa is starting to make real strides in moving the ball after a bleak start to the season.

Now enter Michigan, perhaps the least battle-tested offense in the country. The Wolverines climbed to No. 4 in the nation despite playing three of the bottom six teams in CBS 131. In a single game against a half-qualified team, Michigan narrowly outscored Maryland 34-27 despite that he got a shortfield touchdown on a muted kickoff.

Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy never started a game on the road, nor did he start against a defense as good as Iowa’s. A Saturday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium can be an uncomfortable wake-up call. But monetary statistics? Jim Harbaugh has never won at the Kinnick Stadium in three games as a player and coach. The Wolverines have not won in Iowa City since 2005. Choice: Iowa +335

The situation in Kentucky is similar to that in Iowa. Ole Miss had one of the softest schedules in the country and had just started playing Tulsa 2-2 in a 35-27 win. Quarterback Jackson Dart was relatively efficient, but the Rebels mostly beat out-matched opponents.

However, Kentucky has a trump card. The Wildcats are ranked 121st nationally in rushes, but running back Chris Rodriguez is set to return to the lineup following a suspension. Rodriguez rushed for 1,379 yards and nine touchdowns in 2021 as one of the top running backs in the SEC during the Wildcats’ 10-win campaign.

Mix a returning Rodriguez with a solid defense and seasoned coach Mark Stoops amassing an undefeated start, and the Wildcats should earn more respect. Take the Cats to bypass Lane Kiffin’s squad in the Grove. Pick: Kentucky +210

Congratulations to the State of Georgia, who are officially the best team in the country with a 0-4 record. The Panthers lost to North Carolina and Charlotte by a total of eight points, and they were competitive against solid teams in Coastal Carolina and South Carolina. Now the Panthers are on their way to New York to play army assault.

Troops weren’t at the top of their game early on and there are definitely holes to be found. The Black Knights lost to the Chanticleers by 10 points and lost to UTSA in overtime. The army defense allowed quarterbacks Grayson McCall and Frank Harris to score three touchdowns on each throw with zero interceptions in those losses.

The Georgia State Front was furious against the run, holding their intimidating roster of opponents at an average of 4.2 yards per carry. Will it resist option offense? Playing Coastal Carolina the week before is the best preparation you can get. Selected: State of Georgia +240
