The Washington Commanders are contributing to the quarterback drama that has been dominating this NFL season. According to NFL Network’s Jan Rapoport, Carson Wentz lost his job as a starting quarterback due to a broken finger to Taylor Heinicke, who started for Wentz in the last four games.

Heinicke has been impressive since taking over from Wentz, winning three of the Commander’s last four games. And one of those games was crazy. In Week 10, they inflicted their first loss of the season on the previously undefeated Philadelphia Eagles in a 32–21 thrashing of Monday Night Football.

Considering Heinicke’s play, this is not an unexpected move, but still surprising. After Heinicke started 7-8 with Washington last season, the Commanders traded for Wentz. They didn’t send a whole boat back to Indy for him – a second-round pick and two third-round picks – but he was acquired as a starter. Also, the Commanders are on the hook because of his 2022 salary. But the momentum Heinicke has brought to the team is undeniable. They think Heinicke gives them the best chance of winning, and since it’s all about winning, that’s the only thing that matters.

It will be at least another week before Wentz is officially understudy, as he is still on injury reserve. But according to Pelissero, Heinicke has quite a long leash and will remain in the starting XI until he gives them a reason to make changes.
