Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has once again taken issue with the NFL over the way he conducts his workouts.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, McCarthy was fined $100,000 for workouts deemed too physical by the league. This is the second year in a row that a coach has received such a sanction. The Cowboys also suspended organized tag team activity for the 2023 offseason.

The Cowboys were one of three teams penalized last offseason for excessive exercise, the other two being the San Francisco 49ers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. In this case, McCarthy was fined $50,000 and the team itself was fined $100,000 and docked the OTA for the current off-season.

McCarthy said that after these penalties, the league called seven to nine games troublesome and described the situation as a learning experience.

From ProFootballTalk:

“I actually had a very good conversation with the league office,” McCarthy said of the fine he received. “I thought it was informative. I think they are in a very difficult position. Not as hard as my place because it came out of my pocket. But I think, first of all, we do it right. There is no doubt about it. Our players try to do it right.

“I think there were seven to nine games that we looked at as a group, and to be honest, most of them were younger players, so it’s a rewarding experience for me. I think, like everything in life, if you get punished for trying to do too much right rather than not doing enough right, I think it’s a rewarding experience to learn from.”

Apparently, McCarthy still has a lot to learn.

McCarthy is gearing up for his third season with the Cowboys. The team ends the season 12-5 in which they won their first NFC East title in three years but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC wild card game.
