Asked that newly crowned interim flyweight champion Moreno (20-6-2 MMA, 8-3-2 UFC) is the biggest Mexican star in the UFC at the press conference on the 48th after Dana’s Contender Series 48 fight White on Tuesday, White said he’s a lot more than that.
“Not (only) Mexican – he’s one of the biggest stars we have,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “He is one of the biggest stars on the roster. When we sign autographs with Brandon Moreno, he turns out to be one of the most popular fighters in the company. He is a typical tough, tough Mexican fighter.
“Have you seen him come out with a bandage on his head, like Julio Cesar Chavez, and what is he doing? He comes out with Julio Cesar Chavez’s headband and then ends the fight with a body shot. Have you ever thought about it? It’s pretty damn cool, to be honest.”
Moreno stopped by Kai Cara-France in the co-main event of UFC 277 last Saturday in Dallas to win the interim flyweight title. He is expected to fight for a unification title with champion Deiveson Figueiredo (21-2-1 MMA, 10-2-1 UFC) in his next fight, which will be their fourth fight.
Their streak is currently 1-1-1. Their first fight ended in a draw. Moreno won the rematch, but Figueiredo regained the belt in the trilogy. The MMA world doesn’t often see the same fighters fight a fourth time, but White expects the fight to sell well.
“We could do it anywhere,” White added. “Wherever we end up, we will finish. We could have fought that fight in Alaska. This will be a big fight. People will want to see it. It’s just that you can watch these guys fight 10 times. It’s very rare – not often.”
