We hope Conor McGregor will fight in late 2022 or early 2023, but he will return to the UFC and not the rumored rematch against Floyd Mayweather.

This was stated by UFC President Dana White, who ridiculed reports that McGregor was is negotiating a second boxing matx vs Mayweather after their first meeting in 2017. Frankly, White also denied that McGregor’s first fight against Mayweather would ever take place until he was eventually signed, but he seems adamant that the Irish superstar will compete in mixed martial arts rather than boxing. .

“Not me, I’m not talking about that,” White said with a laugh when asked about the McGregor vs Mayweather 2 rumors. The Jim Rome Show on Monday. “[Conor’s return] will be in a cage. Conor hopes to return later this year, early next.”

McGregor has been training hard to return from a broken leg sustained during his last UFC appearance, where he lost to Dustin Poirier for the second time in July 2021.

Immediately after the fight, McGregor was rushed into surgery to repair the damage to his leg, but the severity of the broken leg was expected to keep him sidelined for at least the next year.

While McGregor is showing interest in boxing again before the end of his boxing career, White is confident his next fight will be in the UFC and there’s no doubt he’s eager to return. Add to that, Mayweather, who is currently booking exhibition fights after retiring from his first fight with McGregor, has already booked his next fight on the RIZIN card scheduled for September in Japan.

“When I talk to Conor, Conor wants to fight,” White said. “Conor gets all kinds of offers for movie roles and all the other things that he could do and make money. He doesn’t want to do any of this. Conor wants to fight.”

With McGregor still motivated enough to compete again, given that he is by far the highest paid fighter in UFC history and also earns significant income from selling his whiskey brand last year, White doesn’t believe this is really a problem right now. . .

White knows McGregor loves to make money, but he’s also still very passionate about fighting, and thankfully, those two things go hand in hand whenever the former UFC bi-division champion competes.

“He does both,” White said. “When he fights, he gets paid. Wrestling is what he wants to do.”
