Detroit Red Wings sign ex-Wolverine, U.S. Olympian Steven Kampfer to one-year deal

Detroit Red Wings added to their depth with the signing of an annual contract with experienced journeyman Steven Kampfer.

The 33-year-old defender spent the 2021/22 season in Russia playing for Ak Bars Kazan, scoring 30 points in 46 games. Kampfer appeared in 231 NHL games, scoring 39 points for the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and Minnesota Wild.

His most recent NHL stint was in the 2020-21 season when he played 20 games for the Bruins. Kampfer served as U.S. alternate captain for the 2022 Winter Olympics.scoring a goal and three assists in four games.

The camper is 5ft 10in, 198lbs and shoots right. It’s an opportunity for him to play in his home state (he’s from Ann Arbor) and gives the Wings an experienced guy who can help mentor young defensemen in junior high and replace them at the NHL level if needed.

The Wings have contracts for next season with three right-backs: Moritz Seider, Filip Chronek and Gustav Lindström; Jordan Osterle also has a contract, and general manager Steve Yzerman indicated earlier this year that there is interest in keeping veteran Mark Staal. Defender Simon Edvinsson, a first-round pick from 2021, is expected to compete for the spot this fall.

Kampfer was selected 93rd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 after scoring four points in 35 games in his first season at Michigan. Kampfer played four years with the Wolverines; by the time he left UM in 2010, he had been traded to the Bruins. He made his NHL debut on December 9, 2010.
