WHAT GIVES? Eric Haase believes that playing time is the reason for the unsatisfactory power

JEFF SEIDEL: How Cam Vie went to MSU, abandoned the Tigers, and magically made his MLB debut

The composition of the tigers: to be specified.

Game Notes: The Tigers will play Game 2 in temperatures outside the park bordering on 100 degrees following their 5-1 victory in Game 1 of the series on Friday. Faedo, a rookie with just 44⅓ innings in the big leagues, is from Florida, so he’s no stranger to high tempos. He has been knocked out over 12 runs (11 earned) in his last two starts while he has recorded just 22 strikeouts.

FRIDAY WIN: Grand slam off Baez led the Tigers to a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks

Javier Baez has been hot for the Tigers since sitting out the series finale against Chicago White Sox last week. Since then, he’s 12 for 31 (.387) with four home runs, three doubles and a triple. Zest? A grand slam on Friday night, making him the Tigers’ third shortstop behind homer in at least three straight games. (Others? Carlos Guillén in 2007 and Dick McAuliffe in 1966.) And Baez, who usually avoids walking, made two free passes during this stretch, and landed only two shots. Overall in June, he’s 17-for-65 (.262) with nine runs and 10 off-base hits in 18 games. He also has a home run and a .303 batting average in 33 career bats against a soft Davis. Tucker Barnhart, who also saw a lot of Davis during his National League Central days, isn’t as good, with one home run and a .190 batting average in 21 games at bat. No other Tiger has met Davis more than three times.

The Diamondbacks have improved from a 110-game season in part because they’re playing nearly .500 balls in Phoenix with a 17-20 home record. Davis has been around for a long time – four teams in eight seasons – but this will be his second start against Detroit. The teams end the series with a 4:10 p.m. start Sunday, after which the Tigers travel to San Francisco to play the Giants starting Tuesday, with the Diamondbacks hosting the San Diego Padres.
