INJURIES: Tigers still figuring out Eduardo Rodriguez injury problem

JEFF SEIDEL: Enough of the Tigers’ injuries. Can someone please wrap Tariq Skubal in bubble wrap?

Game Notes: A beleaguered Tigers rotation with four pitchers on the 10-day IL (Tyler Alexander, Matt Manning, Casey Miz and Michael Pineda), one more ready to join them (Eduardo Rodriguez), one more left Friday start with a bruise left calf (Tariq Skubal) and one at last season’s 60-day IL (Spencer Turnbull) — got a short break from Saturday’s rain that pushed Alex Faedo’s start back a day and negated the Tigers’ need for an extra starter. (They still need someone to start Tuesday in Minneapolis since Manning won’t be ready after his latest abbreviated rehab start, but that’s a Tuesday issue, not a Sunday one.)

Tigers pitcher Alex Faedo during the first half against the Reis on Monday, May 16, 2022, in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Faedo, a first-round pick by the Tigers in 2017 from Florida, is completing the third start of his major league career and arguably the best, holding the Rays to one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts. 5⅔ innings on Monday. In the end, he didn’t make a decision, but it was still reassuring: all three starts were at least five innings with two runs allowed or less.

Of course, the Guardians also pushed back their starting player, Shane Bieber, by a day. Bieber won the AL Cy Young Award in 2020, but injuries have kept him in just 96 ⅔ innings, of which he still posted a 3.17 ERA with 134 strikeouts and just 33 walks. He hasn’t been as effective this season, with 36 strikeouts and 12 walks in 38⅔ innings, but he should have more than enough to deal with the Tigers’ terrible offense, which is the latest in the Majors with 2.7 runs per game.

No one on the Tigers list regrets Bieber more than Jamer Candelario; third baseman is 3 of 21 in his career against Bieber with 11 strikeouts. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jonathan Shoop is only 5 of 18 against Bieber, but that includes two doubles, a homer and only four strikeouts.

After the series concludes (probably 30 minutes later than a normal Sunday thanks to a later start time caused by an exclusive NBC/Peacock broadcast window to put on the Cards/Bookies this morning), the Tigers will head west to take on the Twins. in a series of three games from Monday to Wednesday. The last time the Tigers visited the Twins, they were taken by surprise. Maybe this time they can win at least one game. The Guardians, meanwhile, will play three games in Houston Monday through Wednesday before heading to Detroit for a four-game rematch (excluding this weekend’s series).
