Do the Bills still have a need at defensive tackle?

The Buffalo Bills have added more defense this offseason than anywhere else. While adding a selection signed with von Miller to work on the edge, the mid-line also attracted some attention.

But CBS Sports made a point that it wasn’t enough.

The publication called “a must” for every team in the NFL as the off-season approaches. For Bills, this was a place to defend.

First, here’s the breakdown:

The Buffalo roster is pretty solid across the board. The argument is more about depth in various places than the starting lineup itself. Defensive hold is one of the positions Bill lacks in depth. Ed Oliver was good last season and DaQuan Jones was respectable in his role, but the team was a little behind the front line.

This is a big call for protective gear as the biggest remaining “essential” Buffalo position. Few people will look at the unit as the strength of the team, but this is definitely not the weakest point.

Jones plays a soft role, he stops the run and did it well. Focus on professional football last season they gave him an overall score of 66.4, which is a solid average in line with the outlet’s performance. By no means a weak link.

But Jones, who was signed this offseason, was not the only addition to the middle D-line at Buffalo. Tim Settle has also played well in recent years, but he hasn’t had a chance to compete for the best snaps he’ll get with the Bills.

Not to mention Jordan Phillips, who led Buffalo with 9.5 sacks in 2019, playing the same defensive setup, is back. There are many reasons to “wait and see” with a defensive tackle, but a different position might be a better choice for a “need”.

Other options may have included cornerback or running back.
