Doc Rivers pumps up Tyrese Maxey, “the most impressive young player I’ve ever had”

Two things are true. The first, Tyrese Maxi was a godsend for the Philadelphia 76ers. Drafted 21st overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, he is one of the latest in a long line of defensemen to come out of Kentucky and have looked much better in the NBA system than John Calipari (Devin Booker, Shay Gilgeus-Alexander, Tyler Herro, Jamal Murray, De’Aaron Fox… And the list goes on).

Secondly, Doc Rivers loves hyperbole.

Combine these two things and you have Doc Rivers that goes beyond praises Maxi during ESPN’s “The VC Show” podcast with Vince Carter (NBC Sports Philadelphia hat tip).

“He is the most impressive young player I have ever had in my 21 years of coaching. His work ethic, Vince, is incredible. Many times already this summer, already two or three times, we had to tell him to sit down somewhere and go to rest.

“He works with Sam Cassel and my son Spencer, they are skill coaches. He called Spencer two weeks ago because, like Ros, he must have gone on vacation. The difference, Ros, is that this is his first vacation in his entire life. Here’s what he told us. I thought, “Wait what?” He’s like, “No, I’ve never been on vacation. He asked Spencer, “What do you do on vacation?” The right question is, what do you do on vacation? And Spence is like, “Relax!” As well as [Tyrese goes], ‘How long? For how many days? We’re going for a week, I can’t relax for a week.”

This is a fantastic anecdote and Maxi is ready to take a big step forward in his third season. How will Maxi get along if, as expected, James Harden taking on more of the responsibilities of making games in Philadelphia, that’s something to look out for. However, last season after the All-Star break while Harden was with the Sixers, Maxi’s scoring improved slightly, but he was off the charts at 65.5 percent accurate, 48% of 3. If Maxi can find it again groove, 76s get a lot more dangerous.

Maxi is eligible for an extension after the upcoming season, and the 76ers will gladly pay him the maximum if he continues to perform at the same level.

We know at least that Maxi has Doc Rivers in his corner.
