On Wednesday MMA journalist Ariel Helwani and ESPN Brett Okamoto revealed that Poirier vs. Chandler is in development for UFC 281, scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 12.

Also on Wednesday, Poirier tweeted: “Fight news coming soon!!”

Both lightweights lost to Charles Oliveira in title fights in 2021, and the 36-year-old Chandler has fought two since his May loss. Meanwhile, Poirier, 33, has not competed since losing to Oliveira in December.

Brilliant is a former interim UFC lightweight champion who lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov via submission in a unification bout in 2019. Chandler is a former three-time Bellator lightweight champion who signed with the UFC in late 2020.

Chandler’s UFC career began with a first-round knockout of Dan Hooker in January 2021, before he was submitted by Oliveira during a fight for the vacant lightweight title last spring.

The 36-year-old boxer then lost to Justin Gaethje on points in the contender fight of the year in November before knocking out Tony Ferguson in May of this year. Chandler’s frontal kick over Ferguson considered one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history.
