Hello and welcome to the Citi Open coverage as Emma Radukanou continues her campaign against Camilla Osorio.
Briton No. 1 returned to action this week in Washington, a month after her early departure from Wimbledon in favor of Caroline Garcia. The grass court season is over and Radukanu is now focused on the US Open where she is, of course, the defending champion.
The 19-year-old got off to a strong start at the Citi Open on Tuesday, beating Luisa Chirico 6-4, 6-2. Rene’s mother was watching in the stands, and Radukan said that she likes it when she is around.
“It’s great to have my mom around,” she said. “She didn’t necessarily spend the most time with me, but she is just like any mom. She annoys me if I’m on the phone, if I stay up too late, if I have too many muffins, but she’s also very good. She always insists that I wash my clothes, we hand dry them in the hotel room, but it’s a lot of fun when she travels with me.”
Reflecting on the affairs on the court, Radukan expressed relief after having survived a difficult match.
“I think I definitely had moments in the match when I played good tennis, but I was nervous at the beginning, I think for sure,” she said. “I think playing any first round is always quite difficult. Then, you know, when you’re not necessarily that sharp, you know, little things that you don’t always get right. calm.
“I think that’s something I can do better in this tournament, hopefully in the next round, because, yes, there were some moments where I was a little excited, but I definitely regrouped and found a way out at the end.”
