Jarrod Bowen scored a pair of goals in the first half and marked a memorable occasion when West Ham beat Everton 2-0 at London’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

Bowen’s partner announced she was pregnant with twins, and Bowen celebrated his first goal by tucking the ball up his shirt – nothing new – but both thumbs in your mouth.

West Ham have lost six of seven, having gained just one point since 30 October, but are now one point clear of the relegation zone.

Everton have picked up just two points from eight matches since that defeat and are now in last place with 15 points, two wrong places and 20 matches on the books.

Everton give relegation opponent three more points

Things aren’t looking good at Goodison Park, and anger towards the club’s owner is taking some of the spotlight off manager Frank Lampard.

But a team with established Premier League defenders With Relegation experience has now brought victories to teams in 19th (Southampton), 18th (Bournemouth), 17th (Wolves) and the Irons, now in 15th place.

Conor Cody, James Tarkowski, Idrissa Gana Guye, Seamus Coleman, Alex Iwobi… it’s not a team without quality, but it loses almost every week.

The Butterscotch had a lot of ball – just under 70 percent per game – but that’s a little misleading given that West Ham were happy to counter-attack once ahead at 2-0.

Everton lost the xG battle 2.33-0.67 and lost 11-5.

You’ll be back this summer and the sale of Richarlison, partnered with the withdrawal of Anthony Gordon, who entered this game with 21 minutes played after Boxing Day, rocked the attack. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was easier to shut down and the money Everton got around by not selling Gordon for the wild fees associated with him would certainly have been useful.

But there is something in terms of talent and experience. Can Everton continue to play with Lampard?

Full credit to Irons Moyes, however

Whether David Moyes is the man for West Ham in the long run is another story, but there’s no question that the Irons have struggled hard all season and, frankly, they’ve been terribly unlucky in terms of what, according to extended stats, they should get from their performances.

Thus, a 2-0 lead at half-time was welcome and allowed West Ham fans to dream of things returning to normal as Danny Ings came on as a second-half substitute after his move from Aston Villa.

Bowen was great, as was Declan Rice, and Nayef Agerd, who lost most of the start of the season, looked like a real contender in the back three with Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma. Irons is doing well.

Key storylines and star players

West Ham are playing tight games but not enjoying their winless streak, having lost six games and drawn one by a total xG margin of minus 3.67. West Ham run the midfield with Declan Rice, Lucas Paqueta and friends, and Gianluca Scamacca continues to look like a tinderbox waiting for an explosive rebound.

Everton have scored in four consecutive matches, including the only positive result, an impressive 1-1 draw against Man City, and Demarai Gray has two of those goals. The other scorers are defender (Yerry Mina) and defensive midfielder (Amadou Onana) as the Toffees would certainly like to see Anthony Gordon, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Neil Maupei or another striker show their finishing face in the Premier League.
