Sportzshala Sports’ Andy Behrens and Matt Harmon explain why fantasy managers should add Jaguars’ Zay Jones and Chiefs’ Melvin Gordon this week.
Matt Harmon: Okay, Andy. We are approaching the third week. And, uh, no wires. Bro, this week is ugly. So we have only two recommendations for people. And I don’t think any of them are even close to a full recommendation. But Andy, why don’t you start?
ANDY BERENS: Oh, those are big Cyber Monday specials on adding bounces. No. Yes. Somehow it’s not good there. But I’ll start with Zai Jones, because Zai Jones can be treated differently, but in the last two games he was targeted 24 times. He leaves the game with 14 targets. Caught 11.145 yards. It is essentially an automatic addition in 10 and 12 team leagues.
I’m not saying that you should lean on him when you go forward, or that he plays two or three wide receivers. But Trevor Lawrence had an exceptional game against the Ravens in Week 12. He has the Lions ahead of him. This is a friendly match. And, again, Zay Jones seems to have landed a big role. If he sees 8 to 12 targets, it will be useful for the rest of the season.
Again, we’re not talking about the most explosive player in the league. But it’s been making fantasy noise for a couple of weeks now. I have no reason to think that he will not be able to continue playing in the 13th week in a friendly match.
Matt Harmon: Well, I’m going to talk about a guy who didn’t do anything last week because he wasn’t on the list. But it wasn’t until Monday, around noon PT, that we learned that Melvin Gordon was about to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs’ training team. And, as you mentioned, Andy, anyone… anyone who signed with the Chiefs enjoys it. So I think we should talk about Melvin Gordon here.
Do I think he is a big threat to Isaiah Pacheco, who runs pretty well and has been thrown at by a clear dominant share of the team in the last couple of weeks? No. But I think it tells us something about the CEH injury. I don’t think he’ll be back anytime soon. We already know he’s in IR. And for Melvin Gordon, he certainly didn’t look as good as he did even in 2021 with the Denver Broncos. He didn’t look so good this year. He obviously had groping problems.
But I think he could probably overtake Ronald Jones, who they clearly weren’t happy with, even though he got a little burnt last week. So Melvin Gordon could be the guy who, look, this is the time of year when you only need to have lottery guys on the top bench at the end of your list. You don’t care if the guy brings you one point in a week. You’re not going to run these pros.
I think Melvin Gordon, you know, is probably not playable right now. But I think he might be the guy who, if you’re in the playoffs, gets stuck on the back of your bench. And if something happens to Isaiah Pacheco, he gets hurt or something, Melvin Gordon could be the guy who holds the ball, I don’t know, 13, 14, 15 times for the Kansas City Chiefs to end the season in case of injury. That’s really all you care about at the moment if you’re a good team.
ANDY BERENS: It’s just a great flyer for the Chiefs. And it’s not certain that something will come of it. But we’re only a year behind Melvin Gordon being really good. He was great last year with the Broncos. And everyone wanted a complete takeover of Havonte Williams. But the reason for this is that Melvin Gordon lagged behind Williams on all measures of elusiveness. He was efficient. A very effective pass catcher. So this is a great pilot for leaders. And if he can bring back anything from what he was just recently, it will be a huge victory for Kansas City.
Matt Harmon: There’s one more game on the schedule against the Denver Broncos. So play yourself a nice little game of revenge, if you’re Melvin Gordon, perhaps. A week later, a match with the Texans. So, again, it makes sense to keep someone like this on the bench. And that’s all we have for you this week. Week 13 is not the week you hope for at the end of the season. But these two guys, hey, maybe you can pick them up and Zay Jones will give you a couple of weeks, Melvin Gordon will give you some pluses. This is the best we can do for you here in week 13. Good luck on everything else along the way.
