Former boxer Azea Augustama arrested after allegedly threatening mass shooting at gym

Former boxer Azea Augustama was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly plotted and threatened to shoot up a gym in the Miami area. according to the Miami Herald.

Augustama, 39, was charged with two counts of making written threats to commit a mass shooting and one count of threatening to kill. According to the Herald, Augustama worked as a personal trainer and was a member of Miami’s BOXR gym, but earlier this month his membership was revoked following an alleged dispute at the institution.

Augustama then called the police on Tuesday in an attempt to collect his gym stuff as he had been issued a trespassing warning. However, later that day, he posted on Instagram a photo of the man who shot and killed 17 students and teachers at Parkland High School in South Florida in 2018. He wrote that he was “considering shooting” people for being kicked out of the gym and “saying he touched a girl” and that he was “ready to fire a real gun or [bazooka]”, according to the report.

Police said he then went to post a deposit on an AK-47 at a local pawnshop. Augustama was detained at the pawnshop before he could get hold of the gun.

Augustama, who was born in Haiti and moved to Florida as a child, ended his boxing career with an overall record of 20-3-0 and 12 knockouts. The last time he fought was in 2017 when he lost to Gusmyr Perdomo. Augustama, nicknamed “The Haitian Killer”, also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics for Haiti.
