Former Michigan State basketball player Keith Eppling pleaded guilty to murder and firearms in 2021 when a Detroit man was shot dead. according to Detroit Free Press.
Apling pleaded guilty in court in Wayne County, Michigan to second-degree murder and felony count with a firearm in the 2021 murder of 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds. He agreed to a prison term of 18 to 40 years and will be sentenced in March. The other two firearm charges are to be dropped as part of his plea deal.
Eppling was arrested in 2021 after police said he quarreled with Edmonds, his mother’s cousin, over a gun. The altercation reportedly escalated into a fight, with Epling allegedly firing several shots at Edmonds, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Eppling allegedly fled the scene with his girlfriend Natalie Bannister, who police later said lied to investigators about what happened. She pleaded guilty last year to charges of lying to a police officer and was given an 18-month suspended sentence.
Eppling played at Michigan State from 2010–14 and averaged 10.6 points and 4.5 assists per game during his career. The former Michigan Mr. Basketball briefly played for the Orlando Magic, appearing in five games before it was abandoned.
