SAN JOSE — Coco Gauff defeated four-time world champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.
Gauff, seeded No. 6, hit all of her innings in the first set and ended the 45-minute session with three aces. Osaka made the first double fault of the match early in the second set and Gauff took advantage to take a 2-1 lead. Gauff quickly took a 5-1 lead to take a 40-0 lead before Osaka saved four match points and used her the first ace to make the score 5:2.
Osaka then broke Gauff for the first time in the match to overcome another 40-0 deficit with five consecutive points at 5-4. But Gauff closed it on her eighth match point with a no-return serve.
“What I was most proud of was how I reacted mentally,” Gauff said. “I could easily reset those couple of double faults and match points that I lost. But I kept saying to myself: “One more point, one more chance”, and then the music kind of helped on the bench. I tried to sing along to the song to get myself out of the match.”
Gauf’s win tied the streak with Osaka with two wins each.
“I lost the match today, but I’m really confident in who I am,” Osaka said. “I feel like the pressure is not getting the better of me. I am pressure. I am very pleased with this.”
Gauff will take on No. 2 seed Paula Badosa on Friday. The other winners in San Jose were Shelby Rogers and No. 4 seed Arina Sobolenko.
Rodgers beat top seed Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals for the third time this season. With a first-round victory over 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, she defeated Sakkari, a 2018 finalist and 2019 semi-finalist, for the third time in a row in San Jose.
Sabolenko came back from trailing 5-3 in the third set to beat Caroline Dolhide 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Sobolenko overcame 20 double faults in the match to advance to seventh seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia.
Wimbledon finalist Ons Jaber will face Veronika Kudermetova on Friday’s US Open Hard Court schedule.
