We have a quarterback controversy in New England. Bailey Zappe or Mac Jones? Jones started Football on a Monday night against the Bears didn’t look good, and then Zappe took over. The rookie had two touchdowns and then fell through for the rest of the evening.

Meanwhile, Justin Fields showed off his strengths with a dazzling all-round performance at Foxborough.

High caliber shots:

  • On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lawrence rushed to Zay Jones, who was caught by a receiver just before the defender hit him over the top of the play.
  • With less than a minute left, Lawrence threw a 10-yard long outbreaker with terrible anticipation.
  • In the same drive, he hit Marvin Jones from a very tight cover, but the ball missed.

Small caliber shots:

  • Early in the second quarter, he airmailed a shot into the end zone due to tight cover.
  • Later that quarter, he defeated Zay Jones in the end zone. He had to let in more air under the ball than he probably wanted because of the defender from below, but Lawrence lifted the ball incredibly high and it landed across the end zone.

Summary: For Lawrence, it was something of a regression game. Very thoughtful, lots of easy shots that he hits more often than when he was a rookie. At the end of the game, Clemson Lawrence appeared. But this was not enough to defeat the upstart giant. A meter away from victory.

High caliber shots/games:

  • Late in the second round, Fields miraculously eluded many Patriot rushers in his pocket and ran for 20 yards on 3rd and 14th.
  • In the third, Fields spun off what looked like a real sack and then found Cole Kmet on the touchline on a gorgeous back shoulder.

Small-caliber shots/games:

  • On his first hit, Fields threw a light throw to the flat.
  • In the second, he threw from behind on a deep overhand, which was almost intercepted.
  • On the same drive, he got a bad sack when he could easily drop the ball.
  • Fields misfired on a fast screen in the second half.

Summary: Fields didn’t have anything supernatural in this game, but he was noticeably calmer and more confident in the pocket, progressing and shooting with more accuracy than he did at the start of this 2022 season. Some of the runs that were designed were fantastic and his bouts were special. Stock up on a game for a sophomore, although easy misses still need to be corrected.

High caliber shots:

  • Although not the hardest shot of his life, Pickett found George Pickens over the sideline with a 30-yard lead from the changing surface.
  • In the second, he showed some serious speed, running 16 yards on 3rd and 12th.
  • The touchdown throw to Pickens was very good, although the rookie had an even better one.
  • In the second half, under pressure from within and from the corner, Pickett hit the tight end with anticipation of a deeper break.
  • In the fourth, Pickett dodged the pressure, squared his shoulders and found Chase Claypool for the first down.
  • On the fourth down on the last pitch of the game, Pickett fired a laser beam at Pat Freiermuth 21 yards down the joint against the sealed surface.

Small-caliber shots/games:

  • In the second, on the third and short, Pickett made a throw for Johnson, which floated away and was unfinished.
  • Pickett misfired on a deep sail course run by Chase Claypool in the second half.
  • At the end of the fourth, his interception, thrown to Jevon Holland, was just a throw he had to make. Pickett tried to clear the ball quickly before Dionte Johnson made his break, but Holland robbed the area and got an easy pick.

Summary: Pickett showed many positive results in this competition, although the Steelers lost to the Dolphins by only 10 points. Much of the offensive game plan was presented under the throws, but there was a good mix of impressive grappling and accurate mid-level strikes to make this competition earn a much higher mark than the stat book indicates.

High caliber shots:

  • At the end of the second, he made an unpleasant move on the defender during the fight. The game went for 18 yards.
