The level of talent in boxing is extraordinary, it has not been like this for a quarter of a century, or even more. There are famous fighters who are good enough to compete against the best throughout history. And there are gifted young fighters who show great promise.

But while most of the fights that fans want to see are going to be on the women’s side, set up on short notice, things are very different on the men’s side, where a number of factors converge to make it difficult to organize fights of common sense.

Here are a dozen fights I’m looking forward to that haven’t happened yet, and my analysis of the likelihood we’ll see them in the next 12 months.

Big Boys Heavyweight Champion

They used to say that as the heavy division goes, so does boxing. This is no longer the case, although there are five heavyweight fights that could be exceptional.

one. Tyson FuryWBC heavyweight champion vs. Oleksandr UsykIBF-WBA-WBO champion

Why do I want to see this: First, it will be for both direct and undisputed title. It would be the undisputed champion. And it would have been an exciting fight given Fury’s 6-9 and Usyk’s 6-3 styles.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 3-1.

Optimistic it happens. Fury has been hesitant about whether he wants to keep fighting or retire, but he had previously challenged Usyk, but he was itching to wait for the deal to be made. There should be no major obstacles and the fight should take place in the first half of 2023.

2. Rage against Anthony Joshua

Why do I want to see this: These are the two best big men in the history of football, the rivalry between them is great, and fans in the United Kingdom will be furious. It will be a massive battle between two giants with a lot of skills.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 10-1.

If Fury and Usyk’s negotiations are deadlocked, this will be the next fight. Both fighters want it and they almost agreed to fight in December. It could happen after Fury-Usyk if Fury wins. If he loses, it becomes a longer shot.

3. Deontay Wilder against Joshua

Why do I want to see this: The two strongest punchers in the history of the heavyweight division go for it? Yes please.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 15-1.

Wilder and Joshua have been circling each other for years, but when Joshua was a champion and had power with his massive UK fan base, he was in no rush to make it happen. Now this is a fight he would like to get. There are no major obstacles to this, although on television it is the PBC vs. DAZN showdown where things can get more complicated.

four. Joshua against Joe Joyce

Why do I want to see this: It’s going to be sort of a Wilder-Joshua mini-fight and a Fury-Joshua mini-fight combined. Joyce can hit even though he’s not the fastest guy. And they’re both from the UK with crazy fan bases. It would be a fun rock ’em fight.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 50-1.

CommentA: Joyce doesn’t have a profile and there are other options for Joshua, so I think it’s very unlikely, as much as I’d love to see it.

5. wilder true Joyce

Why do I want to see this: Another bombing duel between two powerful heavyweights. You must think that someone is going to be knocked out here. Wilder has the advantage in speed and quickness, but if Joyce hits him on the chin, be careful.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 25-1.

Wilder wants big fights and it’s going to be a big fight, although Joyce doesn’t look like Wilder again. Not as hard to put together as Joshua-Joyce, but Wilder is going to look for bigger names first.

easy task

There are so many amazing lightweight fights to collect. The next few seem obvious to everyone.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUN 18: Artur Beterbiev celebrates victory over Joe Smith Jr during the light heavyweight title fight at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden on June 18, 2022 in New York City. The fight was stopped in the second round. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

6. Arthur BeterbievIBF-WBC-WBO champion vs. Dmitry BivolWBA champion

Separation: light heavyweight.

Why do I want to see this: That would produce an undisputed champion. What’s more, it’s a typical boxer-versus-slugger fight. Beterbiev is a powerful puncher, and Bivol is an outstanding boxer. Both are on the verge of breaking into the top 10 by weight.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 10-1.

This is not a slam dunk, and if Canelo Alvarez makes Bivol a lucrative offer to compete for the undisputed super middleweight title, that could be a problem. But Bivol made it clear on Saturday after defeating Gilberto Ramirez that he is a light heavyweight and he said legacy is more important than money. There are no obvious obstacles, although Beterbiev will have to defend against Anthony Yarde (yawn!).

7. Terence CrawfordWBO champion vs. Errol Spence Jr.IBF-WBA-WBC champion

Separation: welterweight.

Why do I want to see this: This could be the best fight you could have in boxing. These are the two best fighters regardless of weight class, they are both invincible and both in their prime. This could be a battle for the ages.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 20-1.

The negotiations went badly from the start. PBC has Spence, and Crawford recently signed a new player in boxing, BLK Prime. The fight is lucrative, although probably not as big a PPV as many people think. Thus, financial needs can be difficult to meet. But I believe both fighters want it, and when that’s the case, it’s usually done against the odds.

eight. Ryan Garcia against Gervonta Davissecondary WBA champion

Separation: Very light.

Why do I want to see this: an unusual confrontation between two young stars in the prime of life, with speed and strength. It has the makings Type of battle Argüello-Prior.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 35-1.

There are plenty of problems with this. Garcia works for Golden Boy and Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t work well with PBC’s Al Haymon. Broadcast rights are also an issue, as Showtime has Davis and DAZN has Garcia. Davis could also face jail time for leaving the scene of the crash. For such a great fight, there are many challenges to overcome.

The rest that would be funny notes

I think those five fights make a lot of sense and would be fun, but they’re not the priority right now.

9. Devin Haney, absolute champion, against Shakur Stevenson

Separation: Light.

Why do I want to see this: These are the two best fighters in the world with everything anyone would want to see in a fight. This is one of the best fights in boxing.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 15-1.

Both are Top Rank so it should be easy to do. But Haney is going to fight Vasily Lomachenko, so who knows what will happen.

10. ISahak “Pitbull” Cruz against William Zepeda

Separation: Light.

Why do I want to see this: These are aggressive, high-contact fighters who want to establish themselves in the division. They will both go for it and it could be a wild fight.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 50-1.

Cruz works for PBC. Zepeda with Golden Boy. Haymon vs De La Hoya. Enough said.

Japanese boxer, WBA and IBF bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue during an interview with The Associated Press in Yokohama, near Tokyo, November 23, 2021.
A fight with unified bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue (above) versus unified heavyweight champion Stephen Fulton would be a huge fight in a division that doesn’t often get a lot of attention. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara)

eleven. Naoya Inoue against Stephen Fulton

Separation: Super bantamweight

Why do I want to see this: Best bantamweight vs best super bantamweight? Oh yes. Inoue is a strong puncher. Fulton is a great boxer. Both have upcoming fights, but this is a fun fight that will get a lot of attention.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 20-1.

Inoue’s main promoter is Teiken Promotions in Japan, but the fight will take place in the US with Top Rank as Inoue’s promoter on ESPN. This would lead to a battle between ESPN and Showtime, since Fulton works for PBC. But they’ve worked together before, and it’s going to be a big money fight in a weight class that usually doesn’t have big money fights.

12. Jason Ennis against Virgil Ortiz

Separation: welterweight.

Why do I want to see this: The two best in the world with nothing but pride at stake. This is an epic battle between two of the best fighters in the world.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 100-1

A fantastic fight in the ring, but Haymon and De La Hoya are involved, and without a title, this is unlikely.

13. Teofimo Lopez against Josh TaylorWBO champion

Separation: Very light.

Why do I want to see thisA: A former undisputed lightweight champion against a former undisputed super lightweight champion would be great. Both have fights planned, but if they could fight further, that would be great.

Probability that this will happen in 12 months: 15-1.

If both win their fights, their fight could take place, but most likely in the second half of 2023.
