Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant entered a Florida counseling program on Monday after a string of incidents. according to Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim McMahon of ESPN.
Morant has been out of the team for the past 10 days and there is still no timetable for his return.
It is not clear what specific consulting program Morant was involved in or how long he will be there.
Morant has been involved in several notable and disturbing incidents this season. Most notably, Morant went live on Instagram and showed what appeared to be a gun at a Colorado nightclub just hours after the team played the Denver Nuggets earlier this month. Morant has not played since. Colorado police have decided not to charge Morant with the crime, although the NBA is investigating.
A recent Washington Post report also detailed allegations that Morant assaulted and threatened a teenager with a gun while playing pickup truck at his home last summer. He also allegedly threatened the head of security at a Memphis mall in a separate incident.
Earlier this season, Morant’s entourage allegedly threatened Indiana Pacers staff after a controversial game in Memphis. Employees claimed that someone riding in Morant’s slow-moving SUV pointed a red laser at them, and they believed the laser was attached to a gun.
Morant apologized after the Colorado nightclub incident, and the team announced later that day that he would be out for at least two games, which was then extended to four extra games. It is not yet clear how long he will be out or what the process for his return will look like.
“I take full responsibility for my actions last night. I apologize to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, associates, the city of Memphis, and the entire Grizzlies organization for letting you down,” Morant said in his initial apology. help and work on learning the best ways to deal with stress and my overall well-being.”
Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins didn’t provide details on the matter either. He said last week that “certain steps need to be taken” before Morant can return, but did not elaborate on what those steps were.
Jenkins said Morant would miss the team’s next four games, which opened the door for a possible return on Friday. He was asked about it on the Monday night before the game with the Dallas Mavericks, but he did not give a sensible answer.
“There’s a lot of internal dialogue going on, and obviously there’s still stuff going on at the league level that we’re talking to,” Jenkins said. via Tim McMahon of ESPN. “Ja is fully committed to this process and is ready for whatever comes after these two games.”
