Hawks interested in Deandre Ayton, but wouldn’t pay max money

The Hawks can still pursue Phoenix Suns center DeAndre Ayton as a free agent. Sources tell The Athletic that the Hawks’ interest in the 23-year-old will depend on whether he gets a sub-maximum contract. That may not be an option as the Pistons, who have room for a max contract, are expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of Ayton as free agents.

Thanks to Zach Collins’ contract guarantees today, the Spurs’ maximum tire potential is now $34.4 million.
This is enough to send the maximum offer to a free agent with 0 to 6 years of experience (for example, Ayton).
Insufficient for a player with 7 or more years of experience (example: LaVine) – 17:16

DET can obviously still go after Ayton given their cap spot, but I feel like the draft went so well in their favor (they didn’t expect Ivey to be at 5) that they could play with the youth and apply for assistance to veterans in the field of free agents. Troy said many times not to skip steps. – 22:39

A reminder of your expectations tonight: it’s called know and trade, not trade and sign. Ayton can’t sign contracts or talk to teams until he’s a free agent. The Bucks had trouble with this for Bogdan Bogdanovich 4 days before the 2020 free agent. Didn’t get it and lost the pick of the second round – 11:52
